I was really excited to hear U.S. Sen. John McCain come out in favor of a robust public option in the health care reform bill while he was speaking on the Senate floor Thursday. His declaration that he stands firmly with former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is a stunning step toward the spirit of bipartisanship he espoused throughout the country in 2008 during his campaign for the presidency.

I hope media outlets in Washington and elsewhere will commend the senator on standing up for the millions of uninsured who are certain to be hurt by the Senate legislation as it stands, and hold him to his commitment to be 100 percent with Gov. Dean as the debate progresses in the coming days.

I’m not a woman (despite appearances), and I can’t say for sure how a woman would feel in this situation. But if I heard a knock at my door and some weedy-looking Scottish guy was there, collapsed on the front step, I would probably be a little bit freaked out. My first reaction would be “holy crap someone just got attacked by a group of thugs and mine was the first house they saw, I shall call for an ambulance forthwith”.

So if they then said, “no, don’t call an ambulance, I have just walked a thousand miles,” my response would be “why the fuck did you do that?” And if their reply was “Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door,” I don’t think I’d be particularly grateful. I think I would probably ask them why they didn’t drive, or at least get public transport.

Then they would probably respond that it is a very romantic idea, to fall down at someone’s door having walked two sets of 500 miles to get there, and I would say to them, “no, it isn’t. It’s weird. You stink of sweat, your feet are probably ripped to shreds and I’m pretty sure you’re suffering from extreme groinular chafing.” And then I would close the door, saying “You daft Scottish bastard” for good measure.

But then, I’m just a bloke, so what do I know?

I seriously think about this every time I hear this song.

I would be especially creeped out if he sung the “dah dah dahtdahhhs” when he got there. Helllooo restraining order!

If I would walk 500 miles and then I would walk 500 more, I would find myself a few miles short of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
